A stronger foundation

When Your Child Knows the Rule but Still Gets Stuck

Your child may be able to follow an example during class, then struggle when the numbers change. They might solve a simple equation but lose their place when it includes fractions. Or they may understand the arithmetic without knowing how to turn a word problem into an equation.

Those are different problems. They deserve different explanations.

Pre-algebra tutoring can focus on the point where understanding breaks down: what a variable represents, why an operation works, or which earlier skill needs more practice. The goal is for your child to explain a step and use it again independently.

Consider extra support if your student:

  • Needs frequent help starting or finishing math assignments.
  • Repeatedly makes errors with fractions, decimals, or negative numbers.
  • Memorizes procedures without understanding when to use them.
  • Struggles to translate written questions into mathematical expressions.
  • Is preparing for Algebra 1 but feels unsure of the foundations.
  • Needs someone besides a parent to explain a difficult homeschool lesson.
Skills we can work on

What Can an Online Pre-Algebra Tutor Help With?

Pre-algebra courses vary by school and curriculum. Bring your child’s assignments, textbook, or course outline so we can discuss the right match.

Skill areaExamples of what students work on
Fractions and mixed numbersEquivalent fractions, common denominators, and operations with fractions
Decimals and percentagesConverting between forms, calculating percentages, and applying them to everyday problems
Positive and negative numbersNumber lines, absolute value, and operations with signed numbers
Ratios and proportionsUnit rates, equivalent ratios, and proportional relationships
Order of operationsWorking through parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction
Expressions and variablesSubstitution, combining like terms, and the distributive property
Equations and inequalitiesSolving introductory equations, checking solutions, and representing inequalities
Coordinate graphingPlotting ordered pairs, identifying quadrants, and reading graphs
Measurement and geometry foundationsPerimeter, area, volume, and interpreting units
Word problemsIdentifying relevant information, choosing operations, and checking whether answers make sense

What a Clear Explanation Can Look Like

Here is an illustrative example of the reasoning a student can practice in pre-algebra. It is not a transcript of an actual tutoring session.

Solve: 3(x + 2) = 18

A student may be tempted to subtract 2 immediately. But the left side represents three groups of the entire quantity inside the parentheses.

Step 1: Identify the groups.

If three equal groups total 18, one group must equal 6. Divide both sides by 3:

x + 2 = 6

Step 2: Find the unknown.

Ask: “What number plus 2 equals 6?” Subtract 2 from both sides:

x = 4

Step 3: Check the answer.

Replace x with 4 in the original equation:

3(4 + 2) = 3 × 6 = 18

The equation is true. A useful follow-up is to change the numbers and ask the student to explain why the same steps work. That helps distinguish understanding from simply copying an example.

Support that fits

Choose the Right Kind of Pre-Algebra Support

Homework Help: Work Through Current Lessons

Choose homework help when your child needs support understanding assignments, reviewing concepts, or preparing for quizzes and tests. Your family provides the learning materials, and the tutor helps your student work through them.

Homeschool Instruction: Share the Teaching Load

You can homeschool without teaching every math lesson yourself. With homeschool instruction, your family selects the curriculum, and tutoring includes teaching, lesson planning, and grading for the subject being taught.

Tell us which pre-algebra curriculum you use and where your child is in the course. Learn more about our homeschool tutoring options.

Math Remediation: Address Missing Foundations

When several lessons are difficult for the same underlying reason, working only on tonight’s homework may leave that gap untouched. Remediation includes an assessment and targeted instruction in missing skills.

For example, a student struggling with equations containing fractions may first need help understanding fraction operations. Our remediation tutoring guide explains this service in more detail.

Clear pricing

How Much Does Online Pre-Algebra Tutoring Cost?

Christian Educators Who Get to Know Your Child

Your child’s experience matters alongside the math they are learning. It should be possible to ask a question, admit confusion, and try again without feeling embarrassed.

Family Focused Tutors connects families with Christian educators for personalized online support. We consider the student’s academic needs and the tutor’s experience when making a match. Placement depends on availability.

You can meet our tutors to learn about their backgrounds before your consultation. Tell us about your child’s course, personality, and previous experiences with math so we can better understand the kind of support you are seeking.

Your questions, answered

Frequently Asked Questions

What grade is pre-algebra usually taught in?

Pre-algebra commonly appears in middle school, but placement varies by school, curriculum, and readiness. A student’s current skills and course expectations are more useful for planning tutoring than age alone.

What is the difference between pre-algebra and Algebra 1?

Pre-algebra develops the arithmetic and introductory algebra skills students will build on later, including rational numbers, ratios, expressions, and basic equations. Algebra 1 typically develops those ideas further through topics such as linear relationships, systems, and functions. The exact sequence depends on the curriculum.

Can tutoring help if my child still struggles with fractions?

Yes. Fractions are an appropriate focus for math support. Tell us whether the difficulty is limited to a current assignment or affects many lessons; that helps us discuss homework help versus more targeted remediation.

Can you help prepare my child for Algebra 1?

Pre-algebra tutoring can focus on prerequisite skills such as signed numbers, fraction operations, proportional reasoning, and introductory equations. Bring the upcoming course requirements if you have them. Readiness is about applying those skills, not simply completing a checklist.

Can we use our own homeschool curriculum?

Your family selects the curriculum for homeschool instruction. Share the specific program, level, and materials during the consultation so we can discuss a suitable tutor match.

How many sessions will my child need?

That depends on their starting point, course demands, and goals. Help with one concept may require a different plan from rebuilding several foundational skills. We can discuss an initial schedule during your consultation without promising a fixed timeline for results.

Is the free consultation a free tutoring lesson?

The free consultation is an introductory conversation about your child’s needs and tutoring options. Tutoring sessions are paid according to the service selected.
